Embroidered and beautiful – accessories from the Andes
Sumaq Qara represents fair trade for women
The products from Sumaq Qara are unique. On the one hand they are simply fabulous. They carry with them all the colourful exoticism of Peruvian craftsmanship and, at the same time, speak the language of European design. This has something to do with the fact that a Dutch woman and a Peruvian have teamed up together. They create the perfect symbiosis and have managed, with Sumaq Qara, to build up a company that provides more than 500 women in the Andes with an opportunity to improve their lot as a result of fair working. Through the exercise of their craft skills and the sale of their woollen products to Europe and the USA, these women are in a position to earn a good wage and thus to support their families, too.“With Sumaq Qara we are helping women, who often come from very poor backgrounds or have been victims of violent attacks and other cruelties,” explains Charlotte Amelink, who is currently involved in setting up an online shop for Sumaq Qara products in the Netherlands. With their colourful floral cushion covers, blankets and other accessories, not only does a little good cheer find its way into people’s houses on one side of the market; Peruvian women also benefit considerably from the system, which one can, quite genuinely, describe as sustainable.
