Relax! This was the motto of the fifth edition of the young desingers’ award of Heimtextil. The International Trade Fair for Home and Contract Textiles and its partners, Trevira CS and PolsterFashion, had invited young creative talents to design multi-functional upholstered furniture for the contract sector. The new furniture models are meant to be an invitation not only to sit and recline but also feature an additional function. The award-winning designs will be presented at a special show during the fair on Wednesday, January 11th 2012, 16.30 h, Hall 4.2. Mind the date! “Our young talents award addresses up-and-coming designers in the field of products, furniture and textiles and gives them the opportunity to present themselves to a broad international audience of experts at the largest trade fair for home textiles”, says Ulrike Wechsung, Director Heimtextil.
A symbiosis of function and design
The particular challenge of this award is to achieve a successful symbiosis of function and design. Furniture designer Professor Jan Armgardt, who is a member of the Heimtextil jury for the first time in 2012, specifies the line of approach: “The seating or reclining function is meant to be the result of the design itself. In other words, the model functions solely on account of its form and does not require any engineering.” The task also requires that the furniture possesses an additional function. It might conceivably be an integrated storage facility for a notebook, for example. The model’s materials, workmanship and appearance must also be suitable for use in public areas. Especially the textiles used must meet these high quality requirements. Trevira, the fibre manufacturer, will provide all participants with the amounts of fabric required for implementing their designs free of charge.
Altogether, over 50 entries have been received from 13 international universities, and the jury of five experts – Prof. Jan Armgard (furniture designer), Stefan Bornemann (Sales Director, ERPO Möbelwerk), Silke Forner (Editor-in-Chief, PolsterFashion), Anja Greger (designer, Trevira) and Bernd Hollin (architect) – selected the most interesting models. The 2012 competition is supported by ERPO Möbelwerk. During the fair, the 25 best designs will be on show in a special exhibition in Hall 4.2.
The award is worth a total of € 5,000. For the winner there will also be an opportunity to complete an internship in a design-oriented company from the home textile sector plus an internship allowance of € 1,000.
